CoSMeT – Full wrist medical grade SPO2 sensor watch

Wearable medical device measuring multiple vital bodysigns for clinical studies

COSMET is a full wrist medical grade SPO2 sensor watch aimed at research and clinical applications.  The device senses with an optical sensor on the wrist: no additional finger-cuffs required. The SPO2 signals on the wrist are much more susceptible to noise and movement artifacts. This is the core value that 2M created: signal processing algorithms that deal with these movements and still provide an accurate SPO2 value when possible.  First applications we foresee are in sleep research and clinical applications. Our aim is to create a medical product that can be used in a home environment without disturbing people’s night sleep to detect sleep related problems that stay now undiagnosed. Within the COSMET project BeWell innovations and 2M Engineering work together in the development, valorisation and demonstration of a small wearable health monitoring device, preferably worn on the wrist, that enables measurement of multiple vital body signs:

  • Heart rate
  • Blood oxygen saturation (SPO2)
  • Breathing frequency
  • Body activity

The solution must monitor continuously, reliably and be medically validated for use in the home environment. This project was made possible by a contribution from the European Regional Development Fund as part of Interreg Vlaanderen-Nederland.

First measurements

Lab tests show that the COSMET sensor follows the NONIN reference sensor closely when the oxygen levels drop in our (healthy) test subjects. First full night measurements that compare the COSMET sensor with our NONIN reference show also a close correlation. During the night the NONIN finger sensors got detached a number of times from the subject’s finger. Futhermore the constant pressure annoys people. In the coming period we will extend the home sleep tests to check validity with a larger group of people.

Current status

Matlab algorithms have been developed and tested. Results have been translated in embedded software in a proof of concept prototype (as shown in the picture). This embedded software is now being optimized and tested with a small number of people in stationary situations and in ADL situation (Activities of Daily Life). When these tests are succesfull a first alpha prototype will be created including all product requirements. Date: 06-03-2018
